Coronavirus: Behind the Headlines

What comes to mind for you when you consider the impact of Covid-19 on society?

For me, all kinds of headlines popped into my head – statements like ‘unemployment is up’ and ‘people feel more lonely’. I quickly realised, though, that I didn't know much about the personal stories behind them. For instance, what does it feel like to lose your business? What does it feel like to be part of the medical response?

This self-initiated project was all about creating a space for people to tell their own stories, allowing readers to escape the siloes of their own experiences. It was a means to tell the story of a pandemic beyond the now-familiar headlines.

The idea of looking ‘behind’ the headlines was brought to life by printing real headlines from the national media onto tracing paper, allowing people to see the common, macro narrative, before turning the page and taking time to process the more personal stories.
